Sustaining an interest on a particular fitness program is important in its continuity. It is bound to fail otherwise, and an expensive exercise machine will just gather cobwebs or be used as a coat rack; a pair of running shoes that have yet to hit the pavement; yoga mat that collects dust rolled up in the corner of the bedroom are just some examples of the many aborted exercise regimen.
People start out plunging themselves enthusiastically into a fitness program only to exponentially slack midway when the monotony and drone of the routine hits. Then all the gym becomes is an expensive shower room where you pay once a month to utilize. Conditioning sans the Bulk
One great thing about martial arts training is that a practitioner can condition and tone one’s muscles without excessive bulk, a feature that will be of interest to most women. Even the elderly and the frail can find a martial art that will suit their level of fitness. The beauty of Tai Chi Quan and other internal arts, with their soft flowing movements are examples of martial arts that one can pursue without being athletic. Needless to say, an individual’s general health condition should be assessed by a certified medical healthcare provider before one pursues any exercise program.
Different Strokes for Different Folks
A person opting to take up martial arts as an alternative method of fitness will be deluged with literally hundreds of styles to choose from. This problem can be remedied by following simple principles in choosing what style or system of martial arts to study. The first thing that must be considered is the potential student’s physical and emotional attributes.

On the other hand, you do not expect a fat or heavily built individual to excel in an acrobatic martial art of Brazilian Capoeira. In terms of personality, it is safe to assume that a passive individual will find it hard to adapt to an offensive style, and vice versa.
More than Fitness
It is good to learn that physical fitness is but the tip of the iceberg in martial arts training. As the name implies, martial arts will obviously teach one how to fight. In the post 9/11 world, fighting skills have become a necessity rather than a luxury for the modern man. It is ironic that one can learn compassion through the study of combative arts, but inner peace and gentleness
