In the historic settlement of Pasir Pinji Village in Ipoh, Perak, lies a vibrant center of traditional Cantonese cultural arts: the Fu Joh Seah Cultural and Sports Association (怡保互動社文化體育會). Known across Perak for its traditional lion dance craftsmanship and preservation of rare martial systems, the association safeguards two distinct Southern martial traditions: classical Hung Gar Fist (洪家拳) and the rare, regional Old Style Hung Gar (老洪拳).
Preserved and passed down by Sifu Teh Wing-Liang (鄭永樑師傅), this dual heritage represents decades of continuous transmission in old Malaya.
Part 1: Historical Roots & Dual Lineages
The martial tradition taught at Fu Joh Seah is unique because it maintains a distinction between the widely practiced Wong Fei-Hung branch of Hung Gar and an older, regional variant known simply as Old Hung Gar (老洪拳).

Sifu Teh Wing-Liang & Fu Joh Seah
Having grown up inside the association from his youth, Sifu Teh Wing-Liang dedicated his life to preserving traditional Cantonese performance and combat arts. Beyond his reputation as a formidable martial artist, Sifu Teh is one of the few master craftsmen in Malaysia who still handcrafts, paints, and restores traditional Dragon and Lion heads from scratch.
Sifu Teh inherited his martial knowledge from two respected masters:
- Sifu Aw Kham Thim (歐錦添師傅): Taught classical Hung Gar Fist along with traditional Dragon and Lion Dance methods.
- Master Chan (陳師傅): Imparted the rare, older lineage of Old Style Hung Gar (Lao Hung Kuen).

Part 2: Technical Curriculum & Forms
The syllabus at Fu Joh Seah is divided into two distinct streams, covering both foundational empty-hand routines and heavy classical weapons.
1. Old Hung Gar System (老洪拳)
Old Hung Gar preserves compact, direct combat structures that emphasize hard-striking dynamics, rapid entries, and classic Luohan energy methods.
- Colliding Striking Fist (撞打拳): Direct momentum-driven collision strikes designed to break down opponent guards.
- Lohan Subdue Tiger Fist (羅漢伏虎拳): Traditional Buddhist-influenced frame applications using heavy forearm bridges and tiger claws.
- Knight Family Fist (俠家拳): Incorporates long-range whip strikes and evasive footwork derived from Hap Ga / Knight family mechanics.
- Spring Autumn Big Sword (春秋大刀 – 北派): A heavy, northern-style Kwan Do routine that builds waist power, core stability, and shoulder rotation.
2. Classical Hung Gar Fist System (洪家拳)
The mainstream Hung Gar curriculum includes the iconic “Three Treasures” alongside unique regional combination sets:
- “Gung” Character Taming the Tiger Fist (工字伏虎拳): The fundamental foundation form that builds low-stance stability (Horse Stance / Ma Bu) and bridges the arms (Kiu Sau).
- Tiger Crane Paired Form Fist (虎鶴雙形拳): Combines the heavy, linear power of the Tiger with the evasive, whip-like palm strikes of the Crane.
- Iron Wire Fist (鐵線拳): The premier internal energy (Yun Qi) and bridge-conditioning set of the Hung system.
- Snake, Cat, Crane Combination Shapes Fist (蛇貓鶴混形拳): A multi-animal set that blends fluid snake strikes, agile cat footwork, and piercing crane hand strikes.
- Classical Weapons Arsenal: Broadsword (刀), Spear (槍), Straight Sword (劍), and Long Staff (棍).
